Joint Essays Wanted for Runify Gallaudet!
Are you interested in building bridges and finding common ground between you and people different from you? Perhaps you have a strong opinion on the protests — but you are open to listening to, and learning from someone who holds a very different opinion from yours. Or perhaps you would like to learn more about what it is like to be a person who is different from you in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, hearing status/communication style (oralism vs SEE vs ASL vs cued speech vs CI vs deaf-blind etc), disability, etc.
Please reach out to someone you know in the Gallaudet community who is different from you. (If you’re on campus, then perhaps you could go to one of the public forums and meet the right person there.) Set up a time to have a dialogue together about your differences — and the many others ways in which you are the same. Ideally, try to reach out to someone who you might normally not talk with. Try to push yourself to work outside of your normal comfort zone.
After your dialogue, both of you can write an essay about your dialogue and submit it to me! (This can be one joint essay, or it can be separate essays.) What did you learn about, and from, each other? Where did you find common ground? Did anything surprise you? Why? What advice do you have for other people who want to have a positive experience with their own “reconciliation dialogues”? Do you have ideas for what activities could be done on campus to promote further healing and reunification among people on ALL sides of the protests? What other thoughts came out of your dialogue that you would like to share with readers on Reunify Gallaudet?
Essays can be submitted to me at ashettle (at) patriot.net If you don’t say otherwise, I will assume you both want to be anonymous.
Need help finding a “dialogue partner” from the Gallaudet community? Post a comment here with your contact information, or send me email (ashettle [at] patriot.net). I can’t promise anything. But IF enough people are interested ….
