Letters! Pictures! Stories! Fighting for Deaf and Disability Rights.
[Note: if you were looking for my telethon post, then my telethon post is here. THIS post returns our regular ReunifyGally readers to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Restoration Act of 2007.]
To review where we are: years of court decisions have undermined the true spirit and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. Because of this, employers can simultaneously say to you, “We don’t want to hire you because you’re too disabled for this job,” while in the same breath saying to the courts, “But s/he’s not disabled enough to be covered by the ADA!” Whereupon the courts very often will say, “Yup, not disabled enough” without even allowing the disabled worker a chance to explain his/her side of the story.
The ADA Restoration Act of 2007 is meant to rescue the ADA and restore it to its intended role as a civil rights legislation.
But the US Chamber of Commerce doesn’t want that to happen. If you didn’t already know, then see an earlier blog post I wrote on the recent attack from the US Chamber of Commerce on the ADA Restoration Act, why this is a dismaying development, and what you can do about it.
The one and only blog exclusively focused on the ADA Restoration Act (ReunifyGally doesn’t count because I *do* sometimes blog on other things) has been spearheading the grassroots effort to persuade US legislators to pass the ADA Restoration Act (HR 3195, S 1881).
One of the best tools of inspiring other would-be advocates are letters! pictures! and stories! of what YOU have done so far to help advocate for the ADA Restoration Act. In today’s post entitled “Laboring for ADA Restoration,” Anne Sommers at the ADA Restoration Act blog has put out an appeal for YOUR letters … or pictures … or stories. Follow the link for more detail in Anne’s own words. Or simply send your letters, pictures, or stories directly to her at aapdanne AT earthlink.net (of course, instead of the word AT you should have the @ at sign, with no spaces, or simply follow the link to “Laboring for ADA Restoration Act” to see her email address in the correct formatting.
Have YOU written a blog or produced a vlog about the ADA Restoration Act of 2007 since July 26 ‘07? Is it missing from my on-going list of blog/vlog posts on the ADA Restoration Act? (no ASL vlogs in the list YET — though gnarlydorkette says she might try making one, so keep checking this space) Either email me at ashettle [AT] patriot.net (@ at sign not the word at) or come here and leave a comment in pretty much any appropriate location to give me the precise URL for the blog/vlog post you would like me to link to.
